Week Four
From Moses to Jesus
As we consider Moses this season, many of us may think of him freeing the people of Israel from slavery or giving them the Ten Commandments and the law. Moses led the people and was truly the instrument of God, and for that he is credited as being faithful in God’s household (Numbers 12:7). When we think of Moses, we should also see how he compares and points toward the Messiah.

When we look at Hebrews 3:1-6, we can see a clear comparison of who Moses was and who Jesus is. We see Jesus identified as the Apostle and High Priest. An apostle is one who is sent. We know that Moses was sent by God to free God’s people from physical slavery. However, Jesus was sent by the Father to free humanity from the bondage of sin and share the good news of salvation. Moreover, Jesus is the ultimate High Priest who was able to make one final sacrifice for the payment of sins.

Jesus is worthy of our worship. He is the builder of the house as described in verse 3; He is greater than the house constructed. Moses was a good and faithful servant of the house as described in Hebrews 3:5-6. We know that God used Moses to do many things for the Israelites, but more importantly to move His plan forward so God could save humanity.

Moses is a patriarch of the faith. His obedience should be celebrated; however, he is not worthy of our worship. Rather, Moses was a steward for the role of the perfect Apostle and High Priest. Moses shows that there was a Messiah to come that would perfect these roles for humanity (Deuteronomy 18:18). We know today that Jesus was the long-awaited Messiah, and only Jesus is worthy of our praise because of His perfect life, death, and resurrection to ransom humanity.

Questions to Ponder: Do you believe Jesus is worthy of your praise? How do you praise Him?

Prayer: Dear God, thank You for freeing humanity from the bondage of sin. You are worthy of my worship. Help me to worship You about all else. Amen.
