Day 35

Gathered

by Caroline Stone

After reading Acts 2, you may find yourself overwhelmed with all that happens. You see, within those 47 verses of Scripture the Holy Spirit descends upon people for the first time.  People of all languages begin speaking in tongues and can understand one another. Peter delivers a powerful sermon, explaining the events occurring and introducing Jesus- the resurrected Messiah, and much more. Each of these events has an incredible amount of significance, but I want to focus on one particular group of people today.

For a moment, place yourself in the shoes of the crowd that gathered and witnessed these events. These people had no idea their lives were going to be so significantly impacted or that their own life change would have such an impression on the generations to come. You see, these ordinary people gathered together because they were at first bewildered at the sights and sounds occurring, but God had plans to use many of them.

Peter began preaching to the crowd that had gathered and being filled with the Holy Spirit, he used this opportunity to share with them the greatest news anyone could ever receive. Peter testified that God had intentionally sent His Son, Jesus, to live a perfect life, die on the cross bearing all of the sins of mankind, and rise again.

Scripture then tells us that when the people heard these things, they were cut to the heart and asked what they should do. Peter went on to tell them to repent and be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. On that day about three thousand were added and they were devoted and the Lord added to their number daily.

We see in this story, like many other times in scripture, God orchestrating these events, gathering ordinary people, and using Peter for His purpose and His glory. This instance was no mistake. These people were not there by accident. The Lord desired to be in relationship with these people and use them for His purpose, and He desires the same for us. Today, rest in the fact that the Lord has a purpose for you. He desires your relationship and your devotion, and He will use you if you are willing.

Questions to Ponder: Do you believe God has a purpose for you? Are you willing to be used by Him?

Prayer: God, we are in awe of who You are. You are all powerful and You deserve all of the glory. Lord, we are thankful that You have given us this scripture so that we may learn more about Your character and grow closer to You. Thank You that You sent Jesus to be the covering for our sins so that we may be back in relationship with You and truly know You. Lord, may we never lose the wonder of the fact that You desire to know us and use us just like the people in this passage. Help us to understand that Your ways are better than our own. Guide us to what You have for us, and give us peace that You are in control of all things. Lord, forgive us for when we fall short. Protect us from the things in our lives that may distract us from You and Your purpose. We thank You for all you have done and we praise You for all that You will do. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
